Patients often find unique ways to refer to medical terminology and that is no more true than in plastic surgery. Patients often “speak from the heart” and can make very insightful observations when it comes to describing what they see. They often refer to eyelid surgery as “eye bag surgery”, probably because the skin appears folded and often contains fat. The goals of eyelid surgery are to remove unwanted bulges and to smooth skin.
Another term used by patients is” hooded eyelid surgery”. They are referring to removal of excess skin of the upper eyelid or upper eyelid surgery.
Loose skin about the upper eyelids makes us appear older than we really are. The excess skin can become so prominent that over time it can block our vision. The extra skin fold or “hood” also covers the beautiful upper lid crease that lends a sense of youth and vitality. When upper eyelid surgery is performed, excess skin is removed and a new lid fold is created to improve eyelid beauty. Some patients have excess fat within the inner part of the upper lid which can also create a sense of fullness or “bagginess”. This fat can be safely removed which creates a sense of evenness as one looks across the upper eyelid.

The smooth and flat flowing lines about the eyes can become marred by skin folds and what patients often refer to as “eye bags” underneath the eye.
